On Sunday morning, around 5:00 AM, the Bacău County Emergency Situations Inspectorate (ISU) was alerted via the 112 emergency call system about an explosion that occurred in an apartment building located on Victor Babeș Street in Bacău.
Emergency teams were promptly deployed, including two fire trucks equipped with water and foam, a rescue vehicle, and an SMURD ambulance. Additionally, three teams from the Bacău County Ambulance Service were dispatched to provide first aid.
Explosion Details and Immediate Response
According to initial reports, the explosion took place on the second floor of a P+4 type apartment building, and there was no subsequent fire. The blast caused structural elements to detach, injuring a resident.
Due to the increased risk, authorities evacuated 37 people from the building, which contains a total of 104 apartments.
Coordinated Emergency Measures and Support
In parallel with the rescue and intervention efforts, the ISU Bacău requested support from the Bacău Municipality. The local authorities provided temporary accommodation for the evacuees at the Letea Bacău base. Meanwhile, specialists from the State Inspectorate for Construction were called to assess the structural damage to the building.
The intervention forces were quickly reinforced with the operational group of the inspectorate, two first-response vehicles, command vehicles, a multi-risk container, a minibus, and two ambulances for transporting multiple victims.
Explosion Victims
Rescue teams successfully extracted a 63-year-old man who had been trapped by debris. He suffered first and second-degree burns on approximately 60% of his body and multiple traumatic injuries. The victim was immediately taken by medical teams and transported to the hospital for specialized treatment.
Additionally, a second person experienced a panic attack and required medical care. They were urgently transported to the hospital.
Safety Measures and Ongoing Evaluation
The structural assessment of the building continues to determine whether there are any additional risks to residents. Evacuated individuals are being transported to the temporary shelter provided by local authorities.
ISU Bacău representatives emphasized the importance of adhering to safety measures in homes, particularly regarding the use of gas and electrical installations. The exact causes of the explosion will be determined through an investigation by the competent authorities.
This tragic event highlights the need for regular inspections of utilities in older buildings to prevent incidents with potentially severe consequences.
