Economist Ioan Mocanu, a venerable figure in the Romanian Lions movement and a member of Lions Club Moldova Bacău, celebrates his 90th birthday today, November 18. A distinguished leader and compassionate humanitarian, Mocanu embodies the spirit of the Lions’ motto, „We Serve.”
A Life Dedicated to Service and Community
Ioan Mocanu’s journey with the Lions movement began 33 years ago, during the early days of lionism in Bacău. Since then, he has been a tireless advocate for charitable initiatives and community service. As a former president of his Lions club, Mocanu’s contributions have been instrumental in shaping the club’s impactful activities. He has been present at every event, offering his wisdom, energy, and unwavering support.
The Lions International community has recognized Mocanu’s dedication with numerous awards, including the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship—named after the founder of lionism—and the Milestone Chevron Award. This latter distinction was personally conferred by Douglas X. Alexander, past president of Lions Clubs International (LCI), who praised Mocanu’s decades of service:
„Your commitment to giving back over many years as a member of our association is honorable and commendable. From the smallest project to the largest endeavor, your Lions service has positively impacted your community.”
An Exemplary Life of Vitality and Faith
Despite his advanced age, Mocanu remains spry and enthusiastic. Those who meet him marvel at his sharp mind, physical vigor, and genuine warmth. He attributes much of his vitality to a life spent in the fresh air of his forestry career, where he eventually held the position of Economic Director at Bacău’s Forestry Directorate.
Deeply spiritual, Mocanu also serves as a steward in a local church, where his faith is a guiding force in his life. At this year’s celebration, he presented his friends with a thoughtful gift: the book „O muscă în Sfântul Munte” („A Fly in the Holy Mountain”) by Greek author Vasilis G. Frangopulos. This literary work, a meditation on faith and inner discovery, reflects Mocanu’s profound appreciation for life’s deeper meanings.

Beyond his accolades and achievements, Ioan Mocanu is celebrated for his kindness, empathy, and unwavering optimism.
