Bacău International Airport, Ranked Sixth Nationally by Passenger Numbers

Amid a general increase in air traffic across Romania, Bacău International Airport is striving to strengthen its position in the regional market. According to official data, in the third quarter of 2024, airports in Romania recorded nearly 8 million passengers, 7.4% more than in the same period last year.

Between July and September 2024, most passengers in Romania, approximately 95%, opted to travel on international routes. This focus on international flights highlights the high demand for foreign destinations, especially within the Schengen area, which accounted for 68% of the total of nearly 8 million passengers.

During the same period, airports in the country hosted 69,378 aircraft movements and transported over 12,800 tons of cargo. Although Bacău Airport saw an increase in traffic compared to the previous year, it remains significantly smaller than other major hubs such as those in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, and Iași. These airports boast superior capacities in terms of terminals and runway infrastructure and benefit from a higher number of international flights, thus attracting a larger flow of passengers.

Bacău Airport remains a key point of reference for the Moldavia region, especially for those traveling to Italy, the United Kingdom, and Spain, popular destinations among Romanian communities abroad. However, unlike the airports in Bucharest or Cluj, it lacks a diversified portfolio of destinations and intercontinental flights. Infrastructure limitations and its geographical position are factors that prevent Bacău Airport from attracting more airlines and expanding the number of routes.
